Lung Save - Help Chinese Pneumoconiosis Patients is an individual research project guided by Prof. Jamie Bianco from the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication. To show Chinese pneumoconiosis patients' untold stories and dilemmas, I interviewed agents of change and created images, a podcast, and a documentary video. All creative works were documented by a public website I created from scratch. I also gave a final pitch to bring more attention to the issue.
These two screenshots showed the change in my website's homepage. It switched from a course project to a more professional, modern website. For the website, I paid attention to the color, typography, font size, line height, and reading area to ensure readability and accessibility of my website. For most of the pages, I kept a simple one-column design to make sure readers could focus on the real content.
I intentionally designed more than one way of navigation. Other than the hamburger navigation icon at the top, I added an about section to show the information architecture of the website with icons. Audiences could choose a category to dive into based on their interests.
The project was my first research project, and I learned a lot of communication theories that served as a strong foundation for me to utilize media production as a tool to make a social impact. Meanwhile, I saw the potential of digital media in helping people in need; in the future, I want to continue to contribute my power to social welfare projects.
The course was designed to let students learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript by themselves. While feeling proud of my self-learning ability, if time allowed, I want to make the website more responsive. I also want to learn dynamic web design to add some animations to the website.
